Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's True Danger: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of the European Union. The document asserts that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas pose an grave threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual danger facing Europe is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Between the US and Europe

The data paint a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP grew by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. During this period, European income per person dropped from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major EU nations like France and Italy.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the United States, largely due to technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past fifty years, hundreds of American startups have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a vital issue: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the US and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a genuine unified investment market, which limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hinder European business. A US startup can launch a product under one regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is split among 27 separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Alongside a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not become the leader in developing cutting-edge technologies, it can still dramatically boost productivity by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. However, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
