Congress Passes Measure to Release Epstein Files

The Senate on this Tuesday quickly approved to a bill that will require the publication of case documents related to the deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, following a overwhelming vote in the US House of Representatives and a change of position by the president and his GOP allies. Trump's team changed course after months of trying to delay the bipartisan effort involving a scandal that has dogged the president since his return to the White House.

Expedited Passage in Congress

The Senate acted by unanimous consent, which requires approval from each senator but does not require a individual voting process, accelerating the process. Earlier that day, the House voted decisively for the bill on a 427-1 tally.

The public have waited long enough. Those affected have suffered long enough,” Chuck Schumer declared in a address to the chamber on Tuesday, before urging the Senate to approve it without opposition. “Reveal the truth. Ensure full disclosure.”

Presidential Signature

The measure next heads to Trump for his approval. He stated on the previous day that he would endorse the legislation.

Even though the president has for an extended period rejected the uproar over the official management of the scandal as a “false narrative”, he signalled his support for the House bill over the weekend, and stated he would approve it if it comes to him.

Reaction

Opposition lawmakers, along with victims and their representatives who were watching from a House gallery, cheered after the bill was enacted. The only opposition came from Clay Higgins, who said he worried the measure would reveal identifying details of people, those under scrutiny and others caught up in the investigation.
